Chapter Nine (p83)

Mittagessen mit Sabine         Lunch with Sabine

  • John sets out on his own in search of a pleasant restaurant. He is soon given friendly advice by a pleasant Viennese student.
  • Asking for and giving directions. The polite way of issuing, accepting or refusing invitations.
  • Imperative. Dative verbs. Reflexive verbs, 'to', the differences between 'zu' and 'nach'.

Chapter Ten (p92)

Im Restaurant          At the restaurant

  • John and Sabine find a nice table in the shade and proceed to order lunch. They are having a really pleasant time.
  • All about ordering and paying for meals.
    Introduction to the names of meals and food.
  • Word order, subordinate clauses. Conjunctions: 'daß', 'weil', 'wenn'.
    Relative pronouns.

Chapter Eleven (p97)

Johns charmante Stadtfüherin          John's charming city guide

  • Sabine, a student at Vienna university, decides exam pressure can be forgotten for the afternoon and agrees to be John's tourist guide. John promises to show her London at some future time.
  • Education, training and qualifications. Jobs and job titles.
  • More subordinate word-order, 'seit' construction.
  • Auf der Post. (At the Post Office.)

Chapter Twelve (p104)

Ein schöner Nachmittag          A beautiful afternoon

  • Getting to know 'Apfelstrudel' and 'Eiskaffee' in a Viennese café.
  • Talking about places to go to in the evening.
    Reserving tickets.
    The future tense and forms of 'werden', 'würden'.
  • Articles, present tense, question form, some interrogatives.

  • John asks Sabine to continue as his tourist guide. Hay-fever strikes.
  • At the chemist. At the doctors.
  • Perfect tense with 'haben'. Formation of past participles. Word order. »

  • He wants to get ready for his evening date with Sabine.
  • Travelling by public transport.
  • The Imperfect. Dative verbs and constructions,'mögen'. Word order.

Chapter Fifteen (p129)

Eine große Enttäuschung         A big disappointment

  • It is 8 o'clock on a warm summer evening. John has been waiting for well over an hour for Sabine. Why has she not arrived?
  • How to return tickets, cancel arrangements,
    change bookings and ask for a refund on goods.
  • Pluperfect tense, more imperfect, three ways of expressing 'when'. Relative pronouns.

Chapter Sixteen (p135)

Alles ist wieder gut          Everything is all right again

  • John and Sabine are reunited at last. Unfortunately their time together is cut short.
  • Perfect II (with 'sein'). Pluperfect II (with 'war').The Passive.
  • A car accident and subsequent breakdown on the motorway. Useful supplementary vocabulary and phrases.
